She’d waited a really long time.

He’d promised he’d be back by now. Long before now, actually. He should have been back three hours ago.

Ever since they’d met, she’d never imagined living without him. They’d seen the world together, done so many things. When she’d been alone, there’d been no motivation to leave the confines of her regular existence. He made everything magical. Sometimes, it made her feel they’d found the storybook ending most only dream of.

Then came a knock at the door.

She jumped to her feet.

He had a set of keys.

There’d be no need to knock.
