DISCOVER WORDS: REFLECTIONS – June 2019 Edition

The SHANNON MUIR’S INFINITE HOUSE OF BOOKS weekly column is a place at Shannon Muir’s author website open to interviews and guest posts from other authors. One thing Shannon firmly believes in for readers not only to learn about new books available, but about those who craft the tales behind them.

As its name implies, SHANNON MUIR’S INFINITE HOUSE OF BOOKS weekly column features writers from all genres of fiction who want their potential audience to get to know them, and their works, better – and occasionally may offer features from Shannon herself that support readers to discover words.

DISCOVER WORDS… REFLECTIONS is a monthly blog series that focuses on readers and the discovery of words. All blog posts written by Shannon Muir. This month she shares her thoughts on new words for a new year, begun with a challenge last month to consider synonyms for a word.

This month, she looks at six synonyms for the world GUESS… and leaves readers with a guess for what comes next.

Since we skipped May, we’ll also skip the challenge count up by one word. This month, I decided to see if there are six synonyms for the word guess. I came up with assumption, conclusion, guesswork, hunch, hypothesis and inference.

There are fine differences between those words, and some are very specific to types of settings. Some feel appropriate for solving mysteries. Others I’d expect more in a scientific setting.

The more synonyms I try to seek out, the harder this will get. One day in the next few months, I suspect to come back unsuccessful.

Apparently, not this month though.

Actually, I’m not going to take things that far. Technically “guesswork” isn’t actually a synonym anyway.

This will be the last of this series.

So now what you have to do is guess what feature will launch in SEPTEMBER 2019 in this slot… see you then! There will be summer specials in this slot for the next two months.

As far as the DISCOVER WORDS brand, it is moving on to be used for audio-first debut short stories in an upcoming project. Stay tuned to learn more.
